STUDENTS’ PERCEPTION OF THE FACTORS RESPONSIBLE FOR DECLINING INTEREST IN SECONDARY SCHOOL MATHEMATICS IN AGUATA LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF ANAMBRA STATE

Abstract


The study sought to determine the student’s perception of the factors responsible for declining interest in learning Secondary School mathematics in public secondary schools in Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra state. The study adopted a descriptive survey research design.  To guide the study, three research questions and o n e h y p o t h e si s w e r e f o r m ula t e d. T h e p o p ula t i o n o f t h e s t u d y w a s 9 2 5 S e ni o r Secondary School (II) students. The sample size of three hun dred (300) students were used which comprised   of 147 male student s and 153 female student s . A 19 items structured questionnaire was formulated for the study. The data was analyzed u si n g m e a n a n d s t a n d a r d d e v i a t io n . T h e f i n d i n g s r e v e al e d t h a t s o m e f a c t o r s are r e s p o n si ble f o r d e cli ni n g i n t e r e s t i n s e c o n d a r y s c h o ol m a t h e m a t i c s, s u c h f a c t o r s i n clu d e, t e a c h e r s p e r s o n ali t y , t h e i r m e t h o d o f t e a c h i n g a n d la c k o f i n s t r u c t i o n al materials for teaching mathematics. Based on the findings, some recommendations w e r e m a d e w h i c h i n clu d e : t h e t e a c h e r s s h o ul d d e v elo p t h e a b ili t y o f w o r k i n g c olla b o r a t iv ely wi t h o t h e r s a n d t h e y s h o uld u s e i n s t r u c t i o n al m a t e r i als a n d g o o d t e a c h i n g m e t h o d w h il e t e a c h i n g a n y t o pi c i n m a t h e m a t i c s. Als o b e s t s t u d e n t i n mathematics should be rewarde d at the end of the year or term to motivate other students to study hard.
