Abstract

The Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization encompass a variety of crucial aspects, including but not limited to eradicating poverty, promoting decent work and economic growth, creating sustainable cities and communities, and establishing peace, justice, and strong institutions. These goals underscore the importance of utilizing natural and human resources in a way that enhances human well-being and productivity, forming the foundation of sustainable development. In line with this philosophy, it is essential to adopt a multidisciplinary approach, as suggested by this study. Therefore, this research delves into the significant role that music plays in advancing Sustainable Development in Nigeria, focusing on various music genres selected for analysis. Through an ethnographic method and ethnomusicological examination of these songs, it becomes evident that music in Nigeria serves as a vital medium for social expression and development, seamlessly blending traditional and contemporary elements. Moreover, music acts as a powerful tool for raising awareness on critical issues like poverty and climate change, motivating community engagement and action. The music industry not only creates employment opportunities but also contributes to economic growth, particularly through tourism. Furthermore, by preserving cultural heritage and passing down traditions to future generations, music plays a pivotal role in ensuring a sustainable future for Nigeria. Recognizing and understanding these diverse roles that music assumes in addressing global challenges will significantly contribute to the achievement of Sustainable Development in Nigeria through multidisciplinary strategies that encompass music as a key component.
