Abstract

When a lizard leaves the base of the tree, children will catch it. When a big tree falls, birds will surround the forest. There is no discussion of the growth and development of a nation in which language will be left out. The success, growth modernization and development, peace and stability of a people are attributable to language. It is said that language makes a nation which means that language is the most important ingredient and the first and foremost attitude to the development of a nation. Language is strength, without it, there shall be no understanding or progress among individuals. It is only when language spoken is understood that there is progress. Language is necessary for the building and sustenance of a nation. Anyone who learns his mother tongue well has learnt the traditions and custom of his people, because language is the cord that connects everything one does in life. What are the Igbo language and Nation Building? This paper examines the road through language that should not be followed, that hinders national growth, progress, liveliness and modernity particularly through the Igbo language. Remember that firewood in any land burns to prepare food for its citizen. Whatever name one gives his dog is what it bears. Whatever firewood people have is what cooks their food. This paper argues in favour of the importance of language in the various aspects of life in the Igbo nation. The Igbo people should love, cherish and apply their language in all spheres of life.
