The Effect of Migration on Igbo Language Survival: Challenges and Opportunities

Abstract

Migration often brings about linguistic challenges, particularly regarding the preservation and accessibility of minority languages such as Igbo, a prominent language spoken in Nigeria. This study explores the multifaceted impact of migration on the survival of the Igbo language, examining both the challenges it poses and the opportunities it presents. Drawing upon existing literature and empirical studies, this paper highlights the various factors contributing to language shift, death and endangerment among Igbo-speaking communities, including urbanization, globalization, and the influence of dominant languages. Additionally, it explores the role of diaspora communities in fostering language maintenance and revitalization efforts, leveraging technology and transnational networks to preserve and promote Igbo language and culture. Furthermore, this study discusses policy implications and community-based initiatives aimed at mitigating the negative effects of migration on Igbo language survival, emphasizing the importance of language education, intergenerational transmission, and grassroots empowerment. By acknowledging the complex interplay between migration and language dynamics, this study contributes to a deeper understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing the preservation of the Igbo language in an increasingly mobile and interconnected world.
