OHANAEZE NDI IGBO AND THE RE-BIRTH OF IGBO NATIONALISM 1976-2015

Abstract

This study examines contemporary Igbo ethnic nationalism in Nigeria through the lens of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the foremost socio-cultural organisation representing the Igbo people. Beyond documenting the movement’s ideological foundations, the research critically assesses Ohanaeze’s performance in advancing its objectives and analyses the major structural, political, and internal constraints limiting its effectiveness.The study adopts a mixed methodological approach combining primary and secondary sources. Extensive fieldwork involved in-depth interviews with senior Ohanaeze officials as well as prominent Igbo and Yoruba leaders across various sectors. Data from documentary sources and oral testimonies were subjected to rigorous content analysis and critical interpretation, underpinned by a thematic historical framework.The findings reveal that, despite significant challenges, Ohanaeze Ndigbo has played a constructive role in promoting good governance and fostering inter-ethnic relations. The organisation was instrumental in the emergence of influential pan-regional platforms such as The Patriots, the Southern Senators Forum, and the Southern Governors Forum. By convening elites across ethnic lines and aligning their political interests, Ohanaeze helped moderate inter-group competition and reduce ethnic rivalries. Its consistent advocacy for national unity has also contributed to de-escalating communal tensions and discouraging militant mobilisation by sectional groups.Ultimately, the study lends empirical support to scholarly arguments that ethnically based socio-cultural organisations can serve as effective “bridges” in deeply divided multi-ethnic societies when they channel particularistic identities toward broader national cohesion. However, persistent internal weaknesses and external political pressures continue to constrain Ohanaeze’s capacity to fully realise this bridging potential.
