APPROPRIATENESS AS A STYLE IN A SELECTED IGBO POEM

Abstract


This study examines the appropriateness of the language of ‘Agarachaa†a selected poem from Okediadi‘s (2003) IjeŲwa. Appropriateness of a language in literary studies gives a value judgment of the suitability of language used in the discourse. The specific objective of this paper, therefore is to find out the effectiveness or otherwise of language in the selected poem laying special emphasis on the form, theme, image, allusion and diction. In doing these the study adopted a descriptive approach. The research work found out that the form of the poem stands the acceptable format of writing poem, hence it is written in stanzas albeit, three unequal stanzas. The study also found out that the theme x-rays the level of promiscuity among married women. In addition, the image and allusion aptly synchronize, with the picture and action that emerged in the scene. The poetic device is so technologically chosen that it described the picture painted in the poem in a clear language.
