MORPHOLOGICAL PROCESSES USED TO CREATE IGBO IN THE QUADRILINGUAL GLOSSARY OF LEGISLATIVE TERMS

Kalu Mba Idika

Abstract

The paper examines morphological processes used in the Quadrilingual Glossary of Legislative Terms with the aim of identifying the morphological processes and determining the most frequent morphological process in the language Igbo. There have been few studies of the glossary, as a result of which not much is known of the morphological processes used. The data is selected using a purposive sampling method. A descriptive approach was employed in this paper. The data comprises 55 legislative terms which constitute the corpus of the study. Although the Glossary has three target languages (Hausa, Igbo and Yoruba), this study limits itself to the morphological processes used to create Igbo terms used in the Quadrilingual Glossary of Legislative Terms. The findings show that Igbo has compounding: endocentric and exocentric, borrowing and terminologization.
