AGRICULTURAL POLICIES IN NIGERIA: A FOCUS ON THE ADMINISTRATION OF OLUSEGUN OBASANJO, 1999 -2007

Abstract


This study assesses the different agricultural policy programmes in Nigeria during President Olusegun Obosanjo Administration, 1999-2007. The study is concerned with the formulation and implementation of agricultural policies and programmes as well as their achievements in the agricultural sector in Nigeria in the period under review. The findings show that government's agricultural policies over the years in Nigeria recorded partial success going by the fact that the country still faces challenges of food security, malnutrition and hunger, low earnings from agriculture as the GDP from agricultural sector declines. The data used in this study was collected from both primary and secondary sources. This study adopts the qualitative research approach which prioritizes critical investigation and description of collected data. The study recommended that the implementation strategies of agricultural programmes should be broadened to surmount some implementation challenges that affect the achievement of the objectives of agricultural policies.
