GLOBALIZATION AND WORD BORROWING AS FOOTSTOOLS FOR DEVELOPMENT OF IGBO VOCABULARIES

Patrick Ik. Umezi

Abstract

This study is on globalization and word borrowing as footstools for development of Igbo vocabularies. The researcher wants to find out how globalization and word borrowing can be of immense help in the development of Igbo vocabularies. The result of the research shows that globalization brings distant nations close to each other. When distant nations come in contact, exchange of words become possible and easier. That is how languages glow. The research shows that leading languages of the world like English, German, French, and Italian borrowed words from other languages in order to reach the stage they are today. It equally showed evidence of Igbo language borrowing from other languages, even from other dialects of the same, Igbo, language. At last, it became clear that globalization has made the Igbos to come in contact with people from other parts of the world. This has provided a fertile ground for them to get different words to enrich their language.
