AMALGAMATION AND BALKANIZATION AS THE BANE OF INJUSTICE IN NIGERIA: THE PSYCHO-HISTORICAL APPRAISAL
Abstract
This study investigates the impact of amalgamation and balkanization on injustice inNigeria. Three theories, namely social identity theory, social dominance theory and distributive theory,were reviewed. Data were collected through secondary sources such as academic research papers,government reports, and publications by international organizations. The study employed an analyticaldesign to analyze existing literature and empirical studies in the area. Findings revealed that amalgamationand balkanization significantly contribute to the persistence of injustice in Nigeria. The historical legacyof amalgamation triggers tensions, while the fear or occurrence of balkanization intensifies competitionand power struggles among different ethnic groups, exacerbating perceptions of injustice. Based on thesefindings, recommendations include fostering inclusive dialogue, promoting equitable distribution ofresources, conducting further empirical research, and incorporating psychological considerations intopolicy-making.
