NIGERIAN POLICE AND COMPETENCE CHALLENGE IN TACKLING INSECURITY IN THE COUNTRY

Abstract

In Nigeria, tackling growing insecurity is a critical and urgent task. Without adequatesecurity, the citizens cannot optimize their potential. This research examined the Nigerian Police and thecompetence challenge in tackling insecurity in the country. Attribution theory served as the theoreticalbackground. It explained the thinking and behaviour of Nigerian police’s corruption, impunity, poorcapacity building, and poor remuneration. These hamper professional competence, as well as sacrifice tocombat insecurity. It was recommended that training and education should be integrated more intopolicing. Also, drastic reformation of the Nigerian Police in the area of establishment of State Police willhelp a lot in combating insecurity in Nigeria.
