Child Trafficking, Illegal Migration and its Concomitant Effects on Nigeria’s Socio Economic Development

Abstract

This study investigated the effects of human trafficking and illegal migration on Nigeria’s socioeconomic development. A convenience sampling technique was used in selecting 150 respondentsfrom the total staff population of the Nigeria Immigration Service, the National Agency for theProhibition of Trafficking in Persons and other related offences Commission and theInternational Organisation for Migration. Data was collected using a questionnaire tested withPearson’s Product Moment Correlation Coefficient (PPMCC), and a reliability coefficient of0.82 was obtained, indicating the reliability of the instrume nt deployed. Data obtained wereanalyzed using simple percentages and linear regression analysis. Findings revealed that humantrafficking and illegal migration negatively affected Nigeria’s socio economic development. Itrecommended, amongst others, that the market for cheap labour, which served as an enabler ofhuman trafficking, needed to be paralyzed; otherwise, efforts in this regard may not record anymeaningful progress.
