CURRENT TRENDS IN WOMEN’S INHERITANCE UNDER NIGERIA CUSTOMARY LAW

Abstract

This paper appraisesCurrent Trends in Women’s Inheritance under Nigeria Customary Law . The paper finds that mostcustomary rules of inheritance in Nigeria are discriminatory against women and girls and that judicial attitude towardswomen’s inheritance has changed in modern times in line with human rights considerations. The paper argues that thesocial settings in which customary rules are expected to adapt to these changes to curb hardship for women and girls.The paper recommends adopting judicial and legislative measures to reform customary laws of inheritance in Nigeria toengage the ever changing social conditions in the country.
