Abstract

Language is a phenomenal experience. A means of communication that requires interpersonalexpression found in their different experiences. This work examines the trending lexical items inthe Nigerian Pidgin Language as seen in the Nigerian Hip-hop music today especially since theCovid-19 era. Linguistic relativity theory and monogenetic/relexification hypothesis were adoptedin this study. Ten (10) Nigeria Hip- hop artistes and their songs each were purposefully selectedusing the rankings made by “clacified.com†a blog that does award and profile rankings among theHip-hop artistes every year. This is because these awards ascertain how relevant and useful theyare in the industry. Descriptive method of data analysis was used to elicit these facts about theemerging trends. The study therefore concludes by saying that Nigerian Pidgin Language has beenin the business of making contacts with other languages either for trade or communication needsand this has given the Hip-hop artistes the opportunity of using the indigenous languages beingused around its environs to create a multilingual patch for themselves. This also has helped theNigerian Pidgin Language to grow lexically and in other morphological duplications.
