RESTRUCTURING THE NIGERIAN FEDERATION: WHICH WAY NIGERIA?

Abstract


Restructuring is a song on the lips of many Nigerians today. It has trended for decades and seems to be a topical issue in Nigeria.1 Nigeria as a sovereign State is one that has numerous ethno-tribal groups with large population and enormous land mass. Each ethnic group in Nigeria is endowed with one mineral or other natural resource with corresponding human resources (population). It is as a result of this that Nigeria practices federal system of government which ensures efficient administration of both the vast territories of Nigeria and its ethno-tribal heterogeneous population. Federalism has been put in place as a political mechanism for governance within the Nigeria polity.
