Abstract

Child adoption in Nigeria generally, has been officially recognized by virtue of its inclusion in the Child’s RightAct, 2003 and the Child’s Right Law of states respectively, but its acceptability and practicability becomeanother hurdle. People in urban areas tend to adopt with ease than those in rural areas where the requisiteknowledge and information in most cases are not imbibed. Adoption of children is an alternative means ofacquiring children, this is because it gives childless couples children just the same way as biological parents, thereby curbing childlessness if both parties to it agree. At the same time providing comfortable home and carefor the adopted child. This study seeks to revenue adoption in Anambra State of Nigeria, then takes a look athow it is been perceived by other jurisdictions, whilst considering the laws and its acceptability in Nigeria. It isrecommended that workshops should be organised, especially within most rural areas to sensitize the ruralpeople about the Legality of adoption so as to enhance the acceptability of Child adoption in Anambra State ofNigeria. It is hoped that this measure and others will encourage child adoption on the part of intendingadopters and boost the self confidence of the couples, as well as the adopted child.
